Threads of Gold
Honoring Dr. King
and my mom and dad
Today we are driving out to the ocean.
Today I will stare into the depths of the Pacific Ocean and pray for the best.
Pray for our country.
Pray for the immigrant, the poor, the widow and orphan, the stranger, the trans people, the disabled people, the earth...all targets and victims of patriarchy, greed and bigotry.
Dr. King inspired my dad to become a religious leader and activist.
My father and mother and Dr. King inspired me to become a religious leader and activist too.
There is a legacy here that cannot be broken.
That legacy is woven into the fabric of American life. It is golden. This legacy.
It is woven deeply amoungst the threads of hatred, violence and colonialism.
Look closely. It might be hard to see them today. But they are there!
In the fabric of our society are threads of gold.
Threads of freedom, justice, compassion, love, equality.
Hold onto the gold threads of American society like your life depends on it.
Follow them.
Weave through to the future of American with them.
Do not let go!
When we step back 100 years from now-I hope and pray (and will work to make happen) we see a tapestry of gold with only glimpses of the darkness of this time.
We will overcome.
We will hold onto the threads of a beautiful and just society that is possible for this nation.
Tomorrow I will turn around and drive back inland.
Away from the shore.
Leaving my sorrows and prayers at the coast line to be taken out to sea.
I will return to continue to weave a better society for those of us living today, for those who will come after us and to honor the legacy of those weavers who came before us.
Join me.
